History Sings: Songs of The New Deal

The Great Depression was the most significant economic disaster America has ever seen. Between high unemployment, bank failures, and the stock market crash, almost everyone in America was affected. At the same time, after years of disastrous agriculture policies and severe drought, dust storms crippled the west.

The New Deal, introduced by Franklin Roosevelt, met these disasters with a host of programs and agencies from the WPA to Social Security. A significant number of songs came from this period as ordinary Americans used music to express their sentiments and lighten their load.

Performed by the Dust Bowl Ramblers, this program includes songs from this period along with the historical background.
